Stark Energy Collaborates with EM&I
to Bridge the Gap between
Industry and Academia

Stark Energy in collaboration with its foreign partner EM&I, undertook a noteworthy Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative designed to empower Ph.D. and MPhil students from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Institute of oil and Gas studies with invaluable insights into the Engineering, Oil and Gas sector. This fully funded initiative, which involved a series of visits to key facilities and the introduction of cutting-edge technologies, proved to be a valuable and enlightening experience for all involved.

The primary objective and highlight of this CSR activity was the introduction of participants to EM&I novel technologies. EM&I Global is renowned for its innovative approach to asset integrity, maintenance, and inspection scopes in the Oil and Gas sector. During this phase participants were encouraged to ask questions to gather more insight on technologies (LIMPET intelligent blanking systems, ODIN®, ROV applications, NoMan etc.) overall providing an illustrative narrative of how technological advancements have positively impacted work execution whilst improving on safety.

ODIN®

ODIN represents EM&Is developed and proven range of diverless services. ODIN® inspection methods currently deliver diverless solutions for UWILDs, isolation valve inspection, repair and replacement, mooring chain inspection, and major underwater steel repairs. Much of the ODIN® methodology can be accomplished from inside the hull, reducing the need for any subsea interventions and where ROVs are required, EM&I continue to improve our Integrity Class ROVs with top class partners to deliver unrivalled performance.

NoMan

NoMan® is a revolutionary new method for remote confined space inspections using optical and laser systems. Here the structure can be scanned to provide detailed integrity information including deformation, coating condition, general and close visual, thickness measurements and pitting surveys… all without human-entry for complete robotic inspection of confined spaces.

HullGuard® – Diverless ICCP

HullGuard® is a new class accepted ICCP (Impressed Current Cathodic Protection) system specifically designed for FOIs including FPSOs, MODUs, FSRUs and FLNG assets. It can be easily installed on new assets or can be retrofitted to those in operation and maintained without the need for diver / ROV intervention and with no operational disruption. HullGuard uses an EM&I developed system of retractable anodes, specifically designed for FOI assets, which overcomes the disadvantages of conventional systems based on ship requirements.

By providing participants with insight into these unique technologies, Stark Energy aims to broaden their horizons, inspire creativity, and equip them with knowledge that is not only relevant but also invaluable in today’s rapidly evolving landscape.

In addition, participants were provided with real-world exposure to the intricacies of the Engineering, Oil and Gas sector. To achieve this, Stark Energy organized visits to three distinguished facilities: Akwaaba Oil Refinery, Rikpat Lube Blending Company, and Sentuo Oil Refinery. These visits offered participants a rare opportunity to witness firsthand the processes, QA/QC measures, HSE implementation and systems required for the efficient and successful operation of these facilities.

The impact of this CSR initiative was profound, leaving a lasting impression on all participants. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to gain practical insights into the workings of the Oil and Gas sector, something that is often lacking in traditional educational settings. Furthermore, the introduction to Stark Energy’s partner (EM&I Global) novel technologies was hailed as a game-changer, with participants recognizing the importance of staying abreast of the latest technological developments in the field.

In conclusion, this CSR initiative stands as a testament to Stark Energy’s commitment to fostering learning and development in the Engineering, Oil and Gas sector. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, this initiative would enrich the prospects of participants and contribute wholistically to the advancement of the industry.
